Der bekannte Open Access-Aktivist Peter Murray-Rust hat einen umfangreichen rant unter dem Titel „What is wrong with Scientific Publishing and can we put it right before it is too late?“ verfasst, den es zu lesen lohnt. Ein Auszug:

Unless the process of scientific publication is rapidly and effectively revised there will be a catastrophic crash. It will be unpredictable in both its timing, speed and nature. It will destroy some of the current participants. It will change parts of the scientific process and will change academia.

Auch wenn man dem Murray-Rust’schen Katastrophenszenario nicht völlig zustimmt, so ist es doch schwer zu leugnen, dass sich das etablierte System des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens in den nächsten Jahren und Jahrzehnten deutlich wandeln dürfte.
